In practice, it means physical cleaning of the components (dust, oxidation), replacing materials that wear out over time (thermal paste, thermal pads) and operating system optimisation (Windows or Linux) through reinstalls, driver updates, malware removal and correct configurations.
Unlike a repair (when something has broken and must be replaced), maintenance is preventive: you do it in time to avoid total failure, overheating that burns components or data loss due to an unstable system. It is the equivalent of a car service, only here the "engine" is the processor, the "radiator" is the cooler, and the "oil" is the thermal paste. Ignore them too long, and you pay 5-10 times more later.
Dust accumulates slowly but inevitably. At 6-12 months of use, a desktop PC can have its heatsinks covered with a 1-3 mm layer of dust. This means air can no longer pass through the fins, and heat no longer dissipates. Result: the processor reaches temperatures of 80-95°C under normal load, the system enters "thermal throttling" (automatically reduces performance to protect itself), and you see slowdowns and instability.
In the long run, high temperatures accelerate the degradation of capacitors on the motherboard and graphics card. At a constant 90°C, a PC loses 30-40% of its expected lifespan. That is, a PC that should have lasted 8 years gives out in 4-5.
Thermal paste is a silvery compound (or liquid-metal based, in premium cases) that fills the micropores between the processor and the cooler, ensuring heat transfer. At manufacture, it is perfect. After 2-3 years of daily use, it dries out, solidifies and loses 40-60% of its thermal conductivity. Result: the processor stays hot even if the cooler is clean.
Replacing the thermal paste with a quality one (Arctic MX-6, Noctua NT-H2, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut) lowers temperatures by 8-15°C immediately. The material costs a few euros, plus labour. Small investment, big impact.
Modern graphics cards (RTX 30/40, RX 6000/7000) use thermal pads on the "small" components (VRM, VRAM memory). These pads are pink, blue or grey sponges that transfer heat from the chips to the card metal. At manufacture, quality varies a lot, and after 2-3 years of gaming or intensive work (rendering, AI training), they compress and conduct heat worse.
The typical result on an RTX 3080 with worn pads: VRM at 105°C, memory at 100°C, throttling, fans at 100%, noise like a plane. After replacement with quality Thermalright Odyssey pads, VRM temperatures drop to 75°C, memory to 80°C, quiet fans, performance restored.
A Windows used daily for 2-4 years accumulates: programs you no longer use, temporary files, broken registry entries, conflicting drivers, malware that went unnoticed, incompletely installed updates. All these slow down the boot-up (from 8 seconds to 2-3 minutes), max out the RAM at idle, make the browser lag.
A clean reinstall (with data backup + restore afterwards) gives your PC back exactly like day one. Combined with an original Windows licence and a correct installation of drivers from the motherboard/laptop manufacturer, you get maximum performance for another 2-4 years.
